Understanding the Data
Obtaining authentic statistical data about pets in the United States isn't easy. Most of the information is based on estimates derived from ii periodic surveys, and the diverse survey takers practice not agree. Data reflecting shelter/rescue animal populations is spotty due to a lack of reporting requirements, which leaders in beast welfare are aiming to address with the Shelter Animals Count project.
In that location are two master sources of pet demographics in the United States: the biennial APPA National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Clan, and the U.South. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) which is published every 5 years. These surveys provide data virtually trends in pet buying and produce estimates of the total number of dogs and cats.

Pet Ownership Estimates from Underserved Communities
While the figures referenced previously tend to reflect mainstream America, the Pets for Life team of the Humane Guild of the United States has spent years working in, and collecting data from, our nation's virtually underserved communities which lack admission to affordable and available pet resources. We have found startling differences in pet ownership. People living in underserved communities honey their pets every bit much as pet owners anywhere else in the nation. Community Cat Estimates

Shelter & Rescue Group Estimates
Accurate data from shelters and rescue groups is difficult to obtain because there is no primal data reporting organisation for these institutions, and many under-resourced shelters may not have the technology or ability to share their data nationally. The Humane Society of the United states is working with a wide diversity of stakeholders to change this through Shelter Animals Count, an initiative formed in 2011 to create and share a national database of sheltered fauna statistics, providing facts and enabling insights that will save lives and continue more pets with their families.
